Calculating Flotation

Our EPS (Expanded PolyStyrene) billets have a density of 1 pound per cubic foot. Each cubic foot of foam will support 60 pounds. You can use these numbers to calculate the flotation support of any size foam.

Here is a sample calculation for a 16"/24" pair, 12 ft. (144in.) long:

foam dimensions       ÷1728   x 60lbs/cu.ft.=
16" x 17" x 144" = 39168 cu.in. = 22.67 cu.ft.   1360 lbs.
24" x 17" x 144" = 58752 cu.in. = 34 cu ft   2040 lbs.

total flotation support = 3400 lbs

By this calculation, the foam will be completely submerged when loaded beyond 3400 pounds. In practice, you will want to have flotation support well beyond the maximum anticipated load. This will keep most of the foam (and your dock) out of the water in unloaded conditions, and provide support for additional transient loads. Also, unprotected EPS foam will lose buoyancy over time in the water. Having extra flotation initially helps to compensate for this eventual loss.
